Description

Description

The Sul e Sueste Station, designed by Cottinelli Telmo, was at the time of its completion (1932) the first public facility of official promotion with an expression of international modernism.

The construction of the Metro station at Terreiro do Paço served as the pretext for its alteration. The intervention aimed to respond to new needs while respecting the original architectural character and vocation.

The original Atrium Body will be fully restored, maintaining its role as a representational space.
In the former Baggage Room, the scale of the Atrium Body was reproduced to accommodate the large flows generated by the Metro exit.
The new adjoining volume to the East, with a restrained expression, houses service and retail areas.

Between the south façades and the river, a predominantly horizontal structure was built to house the waiting rooms and establish the connection between the piers and the remaining functional areas.

In Cottinelli Telmo’s building, the interplay of light and shadow resulting from the modelling of white plaster surfaces prevails. In the new construction, tiles were used to create reverberant and textured surfaces.
