Description
With a privileged location in the historic center of Lisbon, this building with two façades benefits from views of Rua do Ouro on the east façade, with the upper floors overlooking Castelo de São Jorge, and on the west façade, of the terraces of Convento do Carmo.
The residential use was maintained on the upper floors, as was the commercial use on the lower floors.
An exhaustive survey and a thorough analysis of the building’s state of conservation revealed the need for a profound intervention. Therefore, the entire structure was replaced, with only the façade walls and the existing vaults of the first basement being preserved.
A metallic structure was used, maintaining or restoring the general characteristics of the building—namely, the floor levels, the distribution of two apartments per floor, and the original structural alignments.
The vertical circulation core was preserved, its perimeter walls were reinforced, and the staircase was rebuilt in wood. The lobby was also reconstructed, maintaining its original geometry, the location of the openings, and the replacement of the corresponding stonework. A new elevator was installed.
The façades were restored, the new window frames were kept in wood, and the storefront on the ground floor of Rua do Carmo was redesigned to reestablish the original proportions of the openings.
Regarding the interiors, all the wooden joinery details that characterize this type of building were faithfully reproduced.
The project includes nine apartments of various typologies, from studios to two-bedroom units, all featuring open kitchens integrated into the living areas.
